Dr. Michael Frierson

A professor in Media Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Frierson recently completed an hour long documentary Fred Chappell: I am One of You Forever that aired on PBS NC in fall, 2022. He was Co-Producer on Up from the Streets (Eagle Rock Entertainment, 2020), a documentary on New Orleans music. His other documentary work includes an hour-long film documentary on New Orleans photographer Clarence John Laughlin and FBI KKK, a personal, one hour documentary about his father, Dargan Frierson, an FBI agent in Greensboro, NC, and his informant George Franklin Dorsett, the Imperial Kludd, or chaplain, of the United Klans of America.

Frierson is the author of two books: Film and Video Editing Theory: How Editing Creates Meaning and Clay Animation: American Highlights 1908 to the Present which won the McLaren-Lambart Award in 1995 for the Best Scholarly Book on Animation.

He teaches filmmaking and editing, and has produced, shot and edited short films for Nickelodeon, Children’s Television Workshop, MSN Video, and AT&T Blueroom.
